ESQUIRE
(a) Made in England.
With none of my references listing the ‘Made in England' label, I cannot confirm if there was any connection between the English and Ausstralian companies. Considering the design, it appears not. The English label provides no details of its source. Obviously, they released old jazz masters, as per the Sidney Bechet Quartet shown here. There is also an Esquire Mercury label, ‘Manufactured and sold by Radio Corporation Pty Ltd for Esquire Records Pty Ltd'. I have no idea if there is a connection. (See this label under Mercury). So, on to the Australian label, and again there is a dearth of information. M iller [M] lists the label, with catalog numbers commencing a D series at 131 in October 1951; an E series with 1003 in October 1949, and a 5000 upward number for masters from the Mercury label. Miller [J] lists one record on Esquire, 20-016, containing Len Barnard and His Southern City Stompers, recorded Melbourne 1952. Esquire 10-007, and 10-008 is of Graeme Bell and His Australian Jazz band, recorded in London in May 1948. There are 10inch and 12inch pressings. Some jazz records in collection: J0011 sc4
